Learn and remember

More memory and learning tips …

Before You Go to Bed, As Soon As You Wake Up

The two very best times to learn something is immediately before going to sleep and immediately after waking up.

A good approach is to spend 20 minutes learning right before bed, then wait 10 minutes and recall and review it.

Go to sleep immediately following the recall and review.

Remember ..sleep is imperative to the learning process, that is when your conscious and subconscious work together and your long term memories are forged

Learn using all your senses

How often have you smelt something that reminds you of past times, or heard a song that takes you back to when you were young ..(I can see you smiling!)

Our senses and our memories are so entwined ..so why not use this to our advantage ?

When you are learning something, if you can anchor this in your mind to a smell, taste, sound, sight or feeling then you are more likely going to be able to recall what you have learned. We are visual creatures, if you can visualise something that you want to learn this will help. Some people find this simple, other It may take some practice.

Discuss with others

By verbalising what you have learned to others it becomes more engrained in to you.

Have you ever been asked, in your job, to teach someone how to do something and then been amazed how much you know ..By recounting that knowledge you are re-affirming it in your memory as well as delving in to what you already know

Use different media

Following on from using your different senses.. Use more than one way to learn, ..there are so many different media forms now, Books, MP3, video, blogs..summarize what you have learned, draw pictures, visualise or perhaps use a mind map

Set your outcomes

When I first heard this ..I thought it was a little strange ..put it works!

By outlining your desired outcome, what you want to achieve from that learning session, makes you focus on what you want to learn..and once you achieve that outcome you will then link pleasure to what you learned therefore making it easier to recall

Preview the material. Read the summary of a book or document, glance through the chapter headings, read the first and last paragraphs of each section, read the first sentence of paragraphs, skim, etc. Try to get the main ideas before beginning.

Review the same way you previewed.

The Beginning and the End

You remember the beginning and the end of a learning session much better than the middle. So put all the most important facts at the beginning and the end of the session. There is a significant dip in the recall of information from the middle of your learning session.

Remember, remember

Remember, Remember

I always thought that I had a good memory until I started to do some research ..I was quite shocked how much we don’t remember..A significant amount of memory loss occurs within the first few of hours after being exposed to new information but the good news is there are some tricks to help ..

Learning chunks

Your Hippocampus (part of your brain) needs time to consolidate what it has learned. So by cramming in too much information, the ability to consolidate it into long-term memory decreases.
So learn new things in chunks of 20 minutes but no longer than 40 minutes, then take a 10 minute break, do something different ..exercise, walking, jumping, stretching all helps your brain consolidate what you have learned
I have a exercise tool called a flexi bar that I use ..not only is it making me take a break and consolidate my learning but I am also doing a 5 minute workout ..super multi-tasking!
Then come back and do a 2 minute review of what you learned

Learn something that you are interested in

If you have a purpose for learning something and you can get excited about learning it then you are more likely to remember it..if you can relate to it, it is more real.
I’m sure you remember things from your school days and they are probably the topics that interested you rather than topics that didn’t

Repetition, repetition, repetition, the key to long-term memory

Re-expose yourself to the information in deliberately spaced intervals. Review what you have already learned – I tend to use a highlighter pen to highlight as I go through the first time I learn something and then when I review it I can quickly scan.
Online can be a little more tricky I normally take notes (with page numbers, times on videos etc)
Or using a mind map system or recall tree can also be an amazing tool and you tend to retain so much more
20 minute learning then a short break
2 minutes– review
After 90 minutes – review
After further 90 minutes – review
1 week – review
6 weeks – review
6 months – review
1 year – review

More learning tips to come this week ….

Being a workaholic

I love working from home ..but it really takes some discipline !

Not discipline to start work ..but to stop!  ..Welcome to the world of a workaholic!

workaholicI have been known to get up at 5am &  log the computer on, my mind whirring with my latest idea’s. ..to eat lunch at 3pm because I am so involved in what I am doing ! ..my family nag me to take a break and bring me endless cups of tea ..but don’t get me wrong …I love it !!

When I get enthused by something I find it really hard to leave it alone…I love learning ..so there are some many projects and endless tasks and systems that I learn on a daily basis ..fantastic!

Learning business, personal development and internet marketing is like a huge sweet shop for me ..so much fun to be had ..all with the title of “business” ..and the great thing is

..I try them all out, test them out; so I can see what I like, what works, what doesn’t, what is fun to do and what is monotonous ..and then I can delegate the needed tasks as I wish ..so cool!

As I have mentioned before, I use a little timer so that I do not spend too long on certain tasks ..and I have promised myself (and husband) that I will start using it to ensure that I take a break too.

We all need a break, in fact some of my best idea’s are when I take time out for me and focus on something else. Then the problem that I have been working on ..my subconscious seems to find a way to the solution ..and hey presto

..fun time means solution time.

To me ..knowledge, and learning are most important in my life ..having fun and quality time with friends and family IS the most important.

SO ..I am off this afternoon to the local Jazz festival for some fun, drinks and a wander around the colourful market 😉

PDF reports lay dormant!

If like me you are forever downloading PDF reports that then sit in your ebook folder never to be read.

It is time to take up my challenge ..look most of them are going to be about stuff that you either know already or that you don’t want to know,  right ?

…but in each of them their is probably one little gem that is just waiting to be found ..that one gem, that you can take, use and create from

…so my challenge to you is …to commit to reading 3 pdf reports a week ..

If you photoread, this will take 15 minutes -see the link below if you would like a very quick lesson in how to do this

If not then you can probably read them in 30 mins a day …before you start reading make it your intention to find at least one gem from your reading.

Take your pad and paper & write down the interesting bits as you go ..I have a bound book that I use to store my gems ..I re:read it once a month and get inspiration

I am amazed how much great stuff that is included in these little pdf  reports that have been just sat there …so let me know what you discover

** I recorded an interview with Marilyn Devonish recently and she gives a short insight to how to photoread ..have a listen .. **

Have fun learning 😉

Kid in a candy store!

Have you ever felt like you a kid in a candy store?

Most of my connections in social media are from the world of Personal Development (facebook etc) and there is always a good vibe going on as well as some amazing information being passed between each other. There is some incredible, mind blowing stuff out there and I sign up to many email and blog subscriptions

My only problem is that I constantly get distracted by new & exciting opportunities being given to me.
For Instance:
In the last few days I have been invited to 2 amazing Internet Marketing seminars, I can receive 3 great new DVDs for free and I can learn more about NLP
….I know that this information is all first class information, from people who I have researched and have respect for (not like recieving some out of the blue email offer, trying to flog me some dodgy traffic builder or article sumbit pogram or something)
..these are good, worth listening to people …so what do I do first ? How do I choose which one ?

With good quality questions:
Will this help me personally or with my business or both?
Is this the direction that I want my business to go?
How much free time have I got that I can commit to this subject?
Could I look at this subject at another time ?
If I miss out on this opportunity NOW how will it effect me or my business?
Am I ready to learn this yet?
If I get all that is promised in the sales pitch how will I use it ?

I could go on ..but I am sure you get my point ..by asking these questions, I feel that I am being responsible to myself and my business
…I can not do everything all at once & I don’t have time for distractions

..so I am eating just one chunk at a time ! (pineapple cubes if you want to know!!)

Tomorrow I am 42…

Tomorrow I am 42……

Yes I really am that old!

At this time of year I have a little ritual that I do
..Itry on clothes that I haven’t worn for a year (mainly to see if they still fit!!) and I clear out all my junk both internally and externally!

So in 42 years what am I thankful for ?

I found , married and continue to love each day a little bit more and more ,my true soul mate Ian

I was brought up my amazing parents who taught me how to value life, to be open minded and accept people for who and what they are.

I have a brother and sister who love me and who have made who I am

I am lighter, fitter and healthier than I have been in the last 10 years

I live in SW France where the air is clear and the sky’s are blue

I know that I am loved and I love me too!

I am mortgage free (yeah !!!)

I have time to read, learn, love and laugh ..probably my 4 favourite things (oh & eating!)

I have my own business – something that I have desired for many years

I have some fantastic friends ..some I see often, others that I see occasionally
and
through social media, some who I may never actually meet!

Nature is all around me, growing and flourishing ..just as I am

My life is full of richness and love
and
I thank you for being part of it

Seminars don’t work unless you take action

So why create the seminarboost.co.uk website?
About 6 years ago I had no idea what personal development was –infact most of the seminars that I now share with you would have been a complete mystery to me.
Then one day I was doing my favourite thing…shopping –in fact TV home shopping, and I stopped on a channel that was showing this huge American guy bounding aound the screen being really excited and telling me that I could change my life and decide exactly who I want to be rather than just going with the flow. Now being the true shopperholic that I am – I of course, order the Anthony Robbins –Get The Edge and subscribed to the Power Talk cds each month….
WOW ..When I listened to them I was amazed.. I could actually design my own life? ..why didn’t everyone know about this ?..Unfortunately most of my friends thought I had lost my mind but my husband Ian, just supported me as usual and watched the explosion
So listening wasn’t enough ..You have to take action..(that’s the difficult part they didn’t tell you on the informacial!) One step at a time and hey you climb that mountain & that is what I did.
I went from being a person who thought that they were unmemorable to believing in myself and knowing that I am worthy of being remembered
I was a finance officer earning just enough to pay the mortgage; I re-evaluated what I wanted to do, re-trained and became an accountant.
I developed a fantastic, honest, loving, caring relationship with my husband
I learned, through seminars,DVD’s and books about the Law of Attraction, NLP,I trained as a life coach, I learned Stock Market Trading, Property investment and how to build a website.
Knowledge had become the oil in my engine but Action had become my wheels.
Last Year we moved to France. Giving up the day job & taking a deep breathe we took the plunge. Life is fantastic, we visit England once a month so that we can attend seminars and meetings ..which is actually how I came to write my website http://www.SeminarBoost.co.uk
I like to book our flights in advance and so that we get a good deal (see shopperholic still..love a bargin!) but I also want to make sure that I can get a seminar boost while I am in the UK..my problem was I had to look on about 10 different site to find what I wanted .. the result , I still go to those 10 different sites to find out what is on & where but now I record it for you as well!
I owe everything in my life to having learned so much from seminars and workshops that I just want to ensure that you get the same opportunities that I did.
So check out http://www.seminarBoost.co.uk and see what events are on near you
Its FREE to join and FREE to share events ..all I ask is that you tell a friend (or if you are a business owner, tell your client list)
Learn, take action & live your life to the full!
